Love and mercy

What a marriage is meant to be. Allah made spouses from among ourselves so that we find tranquillity in them, and placed love and mercy between them (Quran 30:21). The Quran calls husband and wife garments for one another (Quran 2:187): close, covering and protecting.

wamin āyātihi an khalaqa lakum min anfusikum azwājan litaskunū ilayhā wajaʿala baynakum mawaddatan waraḥmatan inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yatafakkarūna

And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.

Your own wealth, in marriage too

What you earn is yours. For women is a share of what they have earned (Quran 4:32), and the mahr is the wife’s alone (Quran 4:4). A wife’s savings, salary and gold stay hers in marriage, and so does their zakat: see our zakat guides.
